First finished piece post “end of classes.” I don’t officially graduate till Thursday. This is a gig poster I made for a pretty stacked ska show in June that I plan on going to. I still have a special place in my heart for ska, and ska posters are fun to draw. Haters gonna hate.

the Littlest Man Band - It’s You

Lyrics:

Take a breath and let it out

If you want go ahead and shout

Cause today you’ve opened up your eyes

 `

Look around

What do you see?

It’s what you’ve always wanted to be

So get ready for the best surprise

`

And this is only gonna get better

Victory never tasted so sweet

Now stare directly into the mirror

Cause there’s someone I’d like you to meet

And it’s you

 `

I know he looks a lot like you

He even talks the way you do

But there’s something in his face

That you’ve never seen before

Faith and hope give a glow

To let everybody know

That he’s gonna rock their asses down to the floor

 `

And this is only gonna get better

Victory never tasted so sweet

Now stare directly into the mirror

Cause there’s someone I’d like you to meet

It’s you

 `

It’s You

It’s You

It’s You

You know, there was something special about Reel Big Fish.  Well, there are a LOT of special things about Reel Big Fish, but one of those special things was named Scott Klopfenstien.  Scott played trumpet, guitar and keyboard in RBF, and also provided backing, and sometimes lead vocals.  The guy was a total workhorse.  One day I discovered that he had a side project (also featuring Dan Regan from RBF) called “the Littlest Man Band.”  And I thought, “you know, Scott’s pretty good.  I wonder how his band is?”

LO AND BEHOLD.  They’re pretty damn good.  Scott takes the lead in this band, playing guitar, keyboard and providing lead vocals.  At some points, his voice can be kind of overwhelming, when he layers it over itself, but that’s usually not the case.  I don’t really know how to classify the Littlest Man Band, genre-wise.  They’ve got some blues, some jazz, some rock, some alt, some latin… it’s just a nice mix of styles that they make into their own.  Plus Scott just has a good, powerful voice.

This song just exudes feel-good vibes.  And that’s nice.  I like feel-good vibes (most of the time).  I really like the horns, the organ is a really nice touch, and everything just flows really well to give the listener a positive feeling.  Even the lyrics, which are *gasp and surprise* about learning to accept yourself.  Cliche.  Yeah, I know.  But they manage to pull it off without being cheesy.  I think that’s a pretty good talent to have, to have positive music like this without a listener going “OH MY GOD, SHUT UP.  STOP TRYING TO MAKE ME FEEL GOOD ABOUT MYSELF, YOU SUCK.”  I’m not even joking that much.  Sometimes “feel-good” music just sucks.  It’s overly preachy, it’s stupid, and it makes you hate the world even more.  That is not the case with the Littlest Man Band.  They’ll make you feel pretty good about yourself.  …at least with this song.  Not all of them.

Also, if you listen through to the end, you get a majorly reggae-fied version of one of their songs “Better Man.”  It’s interesting.  It’s also pretty cool how well Scott can pull of the whole reggae thing.

We just couldn’t resist; we’re putting an 80’s cover on our NEW ALBUM of ALL NEW SONGS (out in June)! Wanna guess what it is??

Interesting tidbits:

  • “One instrumental” on the new album.
  • “The thing’s [new album] supposed to come out in June.”
  • New album is called “Candy Coated Fury,” but the band considered calling it “Honk If You’re Horny.”
  • Talk of a video to promote the new album.
  • “No more re-recordings.”
  • “Any guest vocals?” “Yes.”
  • A “couple” songs over five minutes in length.
